Make Your Raya Healthier and Stress-free with the Right Home Appliances from Cooking to Cleaning

Make Your Raya Healthier and Stress-free with the Right Home Appliances from Cooking to Cleaning

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is approaching soon and normally, the month before Hari Raya is usually the busiest time for many households preparing for the coming festive season, which includes shopping for the latest Raya collections, new kitchen appliances and the family’s favourite ‘Kuih Raya’.

However, this year, Malaysians will be celebrating their Hari Raya with a difference due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Aligned with the challenges for social distancing and the movement control order, we will celebrate from the safety and comfort of our homes. For instance, the much anticipated Ramadan bazaars are going virtual, while visiting relatives and open houses may go online as well.

However, this doesn’t mean that you cannot continue with the festivities. To keep the Raya spirit alive, why not try making your favourite traditional meals in your own kitchen? Philips has just the right tools to help you get started.

Feast your heart out this Raya with home cooked traditional Raya meals:

1. Philips All-in-One Multi-Cooker

Keep your pressure down when cooking under pressure! Traditional Malay festive foods can be challenging and time-consuming for many people due to the lengthy preparation procedures and cooking processes. With Philips Premium All-in-One Multi-Cooker, your favourite Hari Raya meals are made easier and faster with its Dual Temperature Control System. You only need 40 minutes to cook Rendang, compared to 4 hours with a gas cooker.

2. Philips Airfryer XXL

Children (and most Malaysian adults) love their food fried. But they also love cakes and cookies too. Did you know that beside the everyday meats and vegetables, you can prepare cakes, tarts, muffins as well as bread and many pastries with Philips Airfryer XXL. It is easier and healthier. This innovative air fryer features an innovative Twin TurboStar technology that removes excess fat and makes your frying even healthier!

3. Philips Blender Core

With 5 speed settings, the Philips Blender Core is designed to provide you with the perfect texture from smoothies to soups and sauce. A wide range of locally relevant accessories are available for more convenience and ease of preparation for the perfect Kuah Kacang (peanut sauce)! Serve your family and guests the finest smoothies with the ProBlend Crush technology. Its unique 4-star blade and energy efficient 700W motor transforms hard ice into smooth drinks twice as fast.

Keeping your house spick-and-span and breathe easy:

1. Philips Series 4000 Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Keeping your house sparkling clean during Raya can be such a chore. However, cleaning is convenient with the evolution of connected and smart appliances fueled by digitization and technology. Take for instance Philips Series 4000 Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner range of cordless vacuum cleaners that are built for speed, power cleaning and the slim, compact body goes fully flat on the floor to reach under low furniture and around tight corners.

2. Philips Series 3000i Smart Filter Indicator Air Purifier

The Philips Series 3000i Smart Filter Indicator Air Purifier captures aerosols including those which may contain respiratory viruses. Tested independently by airmid health-group to remove up to 99.9% of viruses and aerosols from the air. Also tested for coronavirus. With just one push of a button, the air purifier filters the invisible viruses, allergens or pollutants in your home, to keep it clean and safe. It scans the air 1000x a second to detect ultra fine-particles. Reports the air quality in real time, and intelligently chooses the right speed for your home (in auto mode). The air purifier accurately calculates filter lifetime based on pollution level and operation time. It notifies you when filter needs replacement, for easy maintenance.

Now, it is time to upgrade your home appliances and create precious Raya moments with your loved ones while keeping them healthy and safe.

What is Chap Goh Mei and What Should You Do?

What is Chap Goh Mei and What Should You Do?

“Chap Goh Mei” refer to the fifteenth day of Lunar New Year. On this day, it also marks the end of Chinese New Year celebrations. It is also regarded as Chinese Valentine’s Day.
Back in the ancient days, unmarried young ladies would dress up and accompany by a chaperone to throw mandarin oranges into the sea. Young men on the other side will take note and arrange for a marriage proposal.

Today, single ladies will write their names and contact on the oranges and young men would scoop up these fruits and connect with the lucky girl they got. The tradition has evolved and doesn’t limit to those who singles. People also throw in fruits with good wishes written on them.

Knowing new friends are made easy these days where you can swipe through different dating apps such as Bumble and Tinder but we can’t deny that this culture we inherited from our ancestors is charming and romantic on its own.

Other than Chap Goh Mei, the Chinese community also consider it as “Yuan Xiao Jie” (The Lantern Festival). One of the major activities is to solve riddles on the lanterns. Lantern of various shapes and sizes can be seen everywhere and it is believed that the brighter the lantern is, the luckier you will be. On this night, you can observe cultural performances, lion dances and a lot of fireworks.

The pandemic has taken a toll on us this year and relationships are more challenging to manage. We can still make a good wish and let’s pray that we can reunite with our loved ones and go out freely as soon as we can!

10 Chinese New Year Traditions That Will Bring Luck In 2022

10 Chinese New Year Traditions That Will Bring Luck In 2022

Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year is celebrated on February 1, 2022. More than lanterns and dragons, Chinese New Year is done differently depending on the country where it is celebrated. If you want to bring luck in 2022, you better try these traditional Chinese New Year practices to start the year right!

10 Ways To Attract Good Fortune This 2022 Chinese New Year
We can never have enough luck in our lives, and this Chinese New Year is the perfect time to up our good fortune game. Here are 12 dos that you should get started.

1. Hang New Year’s Couplets in your windows and doors. Chinese couplets are red papers with written Chinese poetry and greetings about wellness, happiness, prosperity, luck, health, and longevity.

2. If you run a business, or you want to advance your career, place coal or golden garlic in a plate inside your house/place of business.

3. Turn on all the lights and open all your windows to allow luck and positive energy to enter your home.

4. Prepare these 7 lucky foods on new year’s eve: fish, dumplings, spring rolls, sweet rice balls, good fortune fruits, nian gao and longevity noodles.

5. Prepare tangerines and oranges. According to the Chinese, tangerines represent wealth while oranges bring luck. Their bright colors also symbolizes gold which means fortune in Chinese.

6. Be sure to do some cleaning before New Year’s Day. Cleaning rids your house of any huiqi, or inauspicious breaths, collected over the year.

7. Give Hong bao or red envelopes filled with crisp bills. They are such a big part of the Chinese New Year traditions. Be sure to give an even-numbered amount except with amounts starting in “four” because it signifies death in China.

8. Wear a dash of red! In Chinese culture, red is a lucky color. It also symbolizes happiness, vitality, and long life. You might even want to wear lucky red skivvies.

9. February 7, 2022, is 初七 (Chūqī), believed to be the day people were created. On this day, spending time in nature is especially lucky for all!

10. Be sure to light a few firecrackers during the new year, as the noise is said to drive away Nian (a terrible monster with evil energy) and negative energy.

8 Must Have Chinese New Year Recipes for a Lucky Year 2022

8 Must Have Chinese New Year Recipes for a Lucky Year 2022

Looking for recipe inspiration this Chinese New Year? Chinese New Year, or the Lunar New Year officially starts on Febuary 1, 2022 and it marks the transition between the Chinese Zodiac signs.
Now we're headed into 2022, the Year of the Tiger. Festivities begin on Feb 1st and run through Feb 15th, 2022 when the Lantern Festival starts, and traditionally includes getting together with family and kicking things off with a big meal on Chinese New Year Eve.

What to eat for Chinese New Year - Lucky Foods
To help celebrate, it's common see the gifting of lucky Red Envelopes and to eat foods symbolic of the Lunar New Year. These dishes are served to give blessings and are auspicious as to provide prosperity, luck and happiness in the coming new year.

1. Chinese New Year Cake (Sweet Rice Cake)
A must have! Niangao is a very traditional sweet dessert made from sticky rice, the name of this cake (年糕 Niángāo) translates to mean "higher year" symbolizing increasing property. Steamed, then served as is, or lightly pan fried, this dish tastes like warm sweet mochi. Steam your own niangao at home with 3 simple ingrediets and this recipe.

2. Pork & Leek Potstickers
Potstickers or dumplings are considered lucky for wealth as they are shaped similar to gold sycees. You can think of these as representing pockets of money, so it's good to have lots of potstickers during Chinese New Year.

3. Traditional Whole Steamed Fish
Symbolic for a good year from start to finish, it's important to serve the fish whole (the fish head to tail which symbolizes the start of the year to end of the year). This fish recipe also makes for an impressive table presentation but is surprisingly simple and easy to cook with a short steaming time of around 15 minutes. Plus, you'll love the flavors of the ginger and cilantro.

4. Whole Chicken
Similar to the fish, the whole chicken represents unity and family. Usually it's served whole with the head and feet included, but unless you go to an Asian grocery store, these types of chickens are hard to find.

5. Longevity Noodles
Noodle dishes are often served during Chinese New Year as long noodles respresent longevity in life. As such, it's best to serve long noodles and take care not to cut or damage the noodles when cooking. For a delicious and savory noodle dish, try my Pan-Fried Soy Sauce Noodles using egg noodles which tend to hold up nicely in cooking.

6. Shanghai Rice Cakes Stir Fry (Savory Rice Cakes)

Similar to the sweet version of my Chinese New Year cakes dessert recipe, these oval cakes (年糕 Niángāo) are also made from sticky rice. Stir-fried with cabbage and your favorite meat or seafood, this savory dish takes less than 10 minutes to cook and will ensure you have a more prosperous "higher year".

7. Traditional Chinese Almond Cookies
Do you remember eating these when you were young? Since these Chinese Almond cookies are circular and baked in the shape of a coin, it symbolizes good monetary fortune. Plus it's a sweet dessert which counts having a sweet year! How do they taste? Simply put, the store bought versions are nothing like the taste of my recipe for these homemade ones. So buttery and flavorful, you won't be able to eat just one!

8. Hot Pot
Hot Pot is one of the favorite family style dinners and also great for family gatherings like Chinese New Year. With a pot of hot boiling soup broth in the center of the table and raw ingredients like sliced meats, seafood and vegetables off to the side, this meal is interactive and fun!
The ingredients can be dipped in savory or sweet sauces, or even eaten plain! The best thing about this meal is that everyone can cook and eat the ingredients they like. For extra fortune and luck, shop and prepare for these suggested items to add to your soup:
  • Mushrooms: Increased Opportunities
  • Noodles: Long Life
  • Dumplings: Wealth and Fortune
  • Meatballs/ Fishballs: Reunion
