Go Solar in Malaysia: Understanding the Solar ATAP Programme
What is Solar ATAP?
The Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) is a green energy initiative launched in Peninsular Malaysia, effective 1 January 2026. Under this programme:
- Domestic consumers can install solar PV systems up to 5 kW for single-phase and 15 kW for three-phase connections.
- Excess electricity not consumed on-site can be exported to the grid, earning bill credits.*
- The programme runs for up to 10 years from the installation start date.
This initiative is especially aimed at TNB customers who:
- Do not have existing solar systems, or
- Are switching from the older NEM programme.
Key Benefits for Domestic Consumers
1. Favorable Credit Rates
Excess energy exported to the grid is credited at competitive rates:
| Monthly Usage | Credit Rate (RM/kWh) |
|---|---|
| ≤ 1,500 kWh | 0.2703 |
| > 1,500 kWh | 0.3703 |
2. Flexible System Sizes
- Single-phase: up to 5 kW
- Three-phase: up to 15 kW
- Larger systems may be allowed after TNB technical assessment
3. Settlement of Credits
- Credits must be used within the same billing month.
- Any excess beyond the net import or Maximum Allowable Quantity (MAQ) cannot be carried forward.
- MAQ = Capacity (kWac) × 5 Sun Hours × Billing Period
How Solar ATAP Systems Work: On-Grid vs Hybrid + BESS
A Solar ATAP system converts sunlight into electricity to power your home while allowing excess energy to be exported to the grid or stored for later use. The system includes solar panels, an inverter, and optionally, a battery energy storage system (BESS). Here’s how it works:
| Component / Step | On-Grid System | Hybrid Inverter + BESS |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Solar Panels | Captures sunlight → converts to DC electricity | Same as on-grid |
| 2. Inverter | Convert DC to AC electricity for immediate home use; Excess electricity is sent to TNB for credits | Convert DC to AC electricity and also stores surplus electricity in batteries |
| 3. Energy Independence | Relies on the grid for power when solar isn’t enough | Provides backup power during outages; greater energy independence |
| 4. Cost | Lower upfront cost | Slightly higher upfront cost but can save more in the long run |
Choosing the right system depends on budget, energy needs, and reliability requirements.
